What is Chiropractic at Reconnect?

A blog post explaining Chiropractic care, different modalities and what it can help with.

Chiropractic is concerned primarily with the nervous system, and with the spine. Your nervous system is the master controller of every function, cell, tissue and organ in your body. It is imperative that your brain can communicate clearly and effectively with your body and vice versa. If this communication system is compromised, the messages become unclear, misinterpreted or sometimes don’t even get through at all. It can be a bit like a Skype call with a dodgy connection – sometimes the video is delayed or pixelated, or you can’t hear the other person properly.

So how do these communication failures come about?

It begins with a kind of interference to the nervous system. Most commonly, these areas of interference are found along the spine. Simply put, the area of interference is where the muscles are tight, the joint in your spine isn’t moving well and the nerve underneath is not working properly. This is what Chiropractors call a ‘subluxation’. Chiropractors are the only professionals trained specifically in finding these problem areas, as well as correcting them.

A subluxation can have many causes, including things like improper lifting, pregnancy, poor posture, and stress. It may be caused by years of doing the same thing, or a one-off incident.

How do you know if you are subluxated?

More often than not, people only realise they have a problem once they start experiencing back pain, headaches or sometimes weakness, numbness and tingling in the arms or legs. However, there are many signs and symptoms that precede the pain, as only 18% of your nerves are dedicated to pain! These symptoms can include:

  • Stiffness or reduced range of movement (e.g. difficulty checking your blind spot or reversing out of your driveway)

  • Cramping, weak or tight muscles

  • Reduced concentration, mood swings or ‘brain fog’

  • Reflux, stomach pains after eating

  • Shortness of breath, heart flutters

  • Low energy or lethargy, reduced resistance to colds

  • Needing to get up and go to the toilet at night

  • Bloating, gas, constipation or diarrhoea

  • Painful or irregular periods

Different symptoms correlate to different areas of your spine, which correlate to different organ systems that are supplied by the nerves in that area of your spine. This is why you may only recognise a few symptoms from the large list.

How can Chiropractic help me?

Chiropractors look to the root of the cause of your symptoms; more often than not this is the subluxations they find in your spine. To correct these subluxations, Chiropractors use a variety of techniques (there are literally hundreds), which may involve a physical body movement where they use their hands, or it may be instrument or table-assisted. Different techniques are used to suit your body/problem, as well as your preferences. This process is called an adjustment.

What changes can I expect to see from receiving regular Chiropractic care?

Most often, people will experience a reduction or complete eradication in their pain (if they have any) within the first 2-6 weeks. Beyond that, other seemingly unrelated changes start to occur; this can include clarity of thought, improved sleep quality, improved moods, better digestion, more regular menstruation cycles, and so on.
